In 1883, C. H. Wente, a first-generation immigrant from Germany, purchased 47 acres in the Livermore Valley . Recognizing that the warm days, cool nights and gravelly soils of the Livermore Valley were ideal for growing grapes, he planted vines and founded Wente Vineyards. Over 130 years later, Wente Family Estates continue to be family owned and operated by the fourth and fifth generation Wente’s.
Wente Estate Grown “Morning Fog” Chardonnay is named after the morning coastal fog pushed by Pacific breezes that streams into the bowl of the San Francisco Bay, and then inland because of the Livermore Valley’s unique East-West orientation. This daily phenomenon moderates the climate to produce excellent, beautifully balanced Chardonnay.
Produced from a variety of clones, which are all harvested and vinified separately, the variation within the vineyards adds to the complexity of the wine.
50% of this wine was barrel fermented in French, American and Eastern European oak. The other 50% was fermented in stainless steel tanks in order to preserve the natural fruit flavours inherent in Chardonnay.
The barrel fermented portion was aged sur lie for 7 months. Bâtonnage, the art of stirring the barrels, was performed monthly. This adds a creamy note to the wine and greatly enhances the texture. Of the remaining 50% of the stainless steel portion, half was aged on lees for 7 months while the other half was racked clean to preserve the fresh fruit characters.
Crisp flavours of green apple and tropical fruit, balanced by vanilla and a touch of toasty oak from barrel ageing. With a mouth-filling body and balanced acidity, this wine delivers a medium-long, refreshing finish.
Eugene Trefethen and his wife Catherine purchased 600 acres in 1968 to create Trefethen Vineyards. At the time, there were fewer than 20 wineries in the Napa Valley which put the Trefethens in a small group of wine families dedicated to a vision of crafting world class wines from Napa Valley. Their first wine was released in 1973 and at the 1979 Gault Millau World Wine Olympics, their 1976 Chardonnay won “Best Chardonnay in the World”.
Rich fruit, crafted in an elegant, age-worthy manner are the hallmarks of the Trefethen style. The third generation is now active with Loren and Hailey poised to put their generation’s stamp on the Trefethen credo of ‘One Family, One Estate, One Passion.’
100% Chardonnay from the Main Ranch vineyard in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. The excellent growing season of 2016 has resulted in truly exceptional wines—full of ripe flavours, that are balanced by natural acidity from the cool nights.
Barrel fermented and then aged for 9 months in predominantly French oak, 25% of which is new.
Fruit aromas of white peach and apple with hints of toast and a touch of spice. The palate is fresh and zingy with bright acidity. Ripe apple and pear fruit flavours are backed with lovely tropical and pineapple flavours. A round and creamy mouthfeel finishes with a crisp and clean finish.
Established in 1969, Cuvaison produces Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown exclusively on its estate vineyard in the heart of the world-renowned region of Carneros in Napa Valley. Cooled by fog from the San Pablo Bay, the rolling hills of this certified sustainable estate have produced distinctive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for over 30 years.
The Estate Chardonnay is blended from 44 different blocks of the Carneros estate vineyard. Each block is vinified separately with barrel fermentation adding a creamy intensity. Partial malolactic fermentation gives the wine extra structure and supporting acidity and minerality. After blending the wine is aged for 8 months in French oak barriques, a third of which are new.
“The Estate Chardonnay displays lovely aromatics of honeysuckle, lily, acacia blossom and clove spice. Upon tasting this wine, it demonstrates a charming mix of white peach, apricot, nectarine and lime zest all tied to a bright, long, refreshing finish.” – Winemaker, Steve Rogstad
