“Riverbank” Riesling 2015, Wente, Arroyo Seco, Monterey, 13% vol, 75cl

In 1883, C. H. Wente, a first-generation immigrant from Germany, purchased 47 acres in the Livermore Valley . Recognizing that the warm days, cool nights and gravelly soils of the Livermore Valley were ideal for growing grapes, he planted vines and founded Wente Vineyards. Over 130 years later, Wente Family Estates continue to be family owned and operated by the fourth and fifth generation Wente’s.

Riverbank Riesling is from the Arroyo Seco region which is within the Salinas Valley and the Monterey Appellation. Created by the flow of the Arroyo Seco river as it spills down from the Santa Lucia Mountains, this funnel-shaped region appears at the edge of steep slopes where the river has cut a deep ravine, forming an imposing riverbank. On the southern edge of this ravine, Riesling flourishes in the deep rocky soils.

The grapes were cold fermented in stainless steel tanks to retain their natural vibrancy and the wine then aged in stainless steel tanks.

Harvested from our estate grown vineyards in Arroyo Seco Monterey, our Riverbank Riesling gracefully walks the line between the old-world Germanic style and the supple, fruit forward styles of the New World. Balancing the slight sweetness with ample acidity is the key to each vintage. We cold ferment this wine in stainless steel tanks to retain and express Riesling’s beautiful floral and tropical notes.”

  • “Morning Fog” Chardonnay 2017, Wente Vineyards, Livermore Valley, 13.5% vol, 75cl

“Morning Fog” Chardonnay 2017, Wente Vineyards, Livermore Valley, 13.5% vol, 75cl

In 1883, C.

Wente Estate Grown “Morning Fog” Chardonnay is named after the morning coastal fog pushed by Pacific breezes that streams into the bowl of the San Francisco Bay, and then inland because of the Livermore Valley’s unique East-West orientation. This daily phenomenon moderates the climate to produce excellent, beautifully balanced Chardonnay.

Produced from a variety of clones, which are all harvested and vinified separately, the variation within the vineyards adds to the complexity of the wine.

50% of this wine was barrel fermented in French, American and Eastern European oak. The other 50% was fermented in stainless steel tanks in order to preserve the natural fruit flavours inherent in Chardonnay.

The barrel fermented portion was aged sur lie for 7 months. Bâtonnage, the art of stirring the barrels, was performed monthly. This adds a creamy note to the wine and greatly enhances the texture. Of the remaining 50% of the stainless steel portion, half was aged on lees for 7 months while the other half was racked clean to preserve the fresh fruit characters.

Crisp flavours of green apple and tropical fruit, balanced by vanilla and a touch of toasty oak from barrel ageing. With a mouth-filling body and balanced acidity, this wine delivers a medium-long, refreshing finish.

Eugene Trefethen and his wife Catherine purchased 600 acres in 1968 to create Trefethen Vineyards. At the time, there were fewer than 20 wineries in the Napa Valley which put the Trefethens in a small group of wine families dedicated to a vision of crafting world class wines from Napa Valley. Their first wine was released in 1973 and at the 1979 Gault Millau World Wine Olympics, their 1976 Chardonnay won “Best Chardonnay in the World”.

Rich fruit, crafted in an elegant, age-worthy manner are the hallmarks of the Trefethen style.  The third generation is now active with Loren and Hailey poised to put their generation’s stamp on the Trefethen credo of ‘One Family, One Estate, One Passion.’

100% Chardonnay from the Main Ranch vineyard in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. The excellent growing season of 2016 has resulted in truly exceptional wines—full of ripe flavours, that are balanced by natural acidity from the cool nights.

Barrel fermented and then aged for 9 months in predominantly French oak, 25% of which is new.

Fruit aromas of white peach and apple with hints of toast and a touch of spice. The palate is fresh and zingy with bright acidity. Ripe apple and pear fruit flavours are backed with lovely tropical and pineapple flavours. A round and creamy mouthfeel finishes with a crisp and clean finish.

Jim Clendenen, the “Mind Behind” Au Bon Climat, creates internationally recognized, Burgundian-focused wines of balance and intrigue – but in California.

Au Bon Climat has been making balanced, food friendly Chardonnays since 1982. Even in the early 2000s when ripe, oaky Chardonnays were all the rage, Au Bon Climat stuck to a more subtle and refined style, with minerality and intensity well balanced.

“Wild Boy” is made in a full, rich style but still retains a fine balance between the ripe fruit with its tropical fruit flavours, toasty oak and supporting minerality and acidity.

Jim “Wild Boy” Clendenen at his very best!
