    Château du Coing is located in the village of Saint Fiacre, in the Sèvre et Maine district of Muscadet.

     

    Sèvre et Maine is acknowledged to be the best district in which to grow Muscadet, or Melon de Bourgogne as the variety is also known. These two rivers moderate the cool temperatures which is important at this northerly latitude and the distinctive gneiss soils give a particularly racy, fragrant style of Muscadet. The vines are on average 65 years old.

     

    Only stainless steel was used to ferment and age this wine. However, it qualifies as Muscadet `Sur Lie` due to the six months` ageing on its fine lees after the fermentation. This adds body, richness and longevity to the pure, citrus fruit; a serious wine with firm structure and good depth results.

     

    This wine is appreciated for its young, vivid, dry and fruity side that makes it the perfect companion to seafood. A delicate, pale lemon colour with light floral aromas of jasmine, pear and lightly toasted bread. The palate is juicy with pure, citrus fruit character and a long, fine-textured finish.

    The Côte de Gien is situated just to the north of Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire.

     

    In 1991, the Thibault family decided to create the “Domaine de Villargeau” on land facing south-southwest and enjoying the greatest amount of sunshine. Two brothers, Fernand and Jean-François Thibault, cleared hillsides abandoned since the phylloxera crisis of the mid nineteen century in order to plant vines. In 2000, they were joined by one of their sons, Marc, returning to the area armed with his apprenticeship and experience in viticulture and oenology.

     

    Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and then aged on its lees, again in steel, before bottling.

     

    Dry, crisp and refreshing, the wine is a slightly lighter and softer style of Sauvignon than that produced in Sancerre and Pouilly. Excellent wine and great value.

    The Vigneau brothers, Christophe and Stéphane, have 30 hectares of Chenin Blanc grown on prime Vouvray vineyards spread over a variety of sites.

     

    The delicious, minerally Vouvray Sec “Cuvée Silex” is from flint (silex) and clay soils. Silex is considered the finest soil type for the Chenin Blanc in this part of the Loire Valley.

     

    Pale straw in appearance, the nose has a lovely blend of herby notes, green apple freshness and just a touch of honey. The palate is dry with apple flavours, brilliant zesty structure and a very long finish.

     

    The late Jean-Michel Vigneau began the process of converting to organic production in the early 1990’s and in 1999 Vigneau-Chevreau received certification from Ecocert. The current generation have taken the next step by adopting a biodynamic approach which pays close attention to the natural rhythms of the earth and lunar cycles.

     

    Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau is one of the only two estates in Vouvray to be biodynamic and they own 25% of the appellation’s organic vineyards – 30 ha.

    Established in 1921, Domaine Couly-Dutheil today has some 90 hectares of vineyards that are planted mainly with Cabernet Franc.

     


    100% Cabernet Franc from vines with an average age of 45 years, “Baronnie Madeleine” is only made in the finest of years. Lutte Raisonnée is practised whereby non natural fertilizers and pest control are only used when absolutely essential, this pragmatic approach looks to respect and maintain the natural biodiversity in the soil and vineyard environment.

     

    All the grapes are hand harvested, de-stalked and carefully sorted before being fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. The fermentation is with naturally occuring yeasts and lasts for two weeks with a further 10 days or so of maceration. The wine is then aged in temperature controlled stainless steel for a further 12 months.

     

    Ruby in colour with a very intense nose full of juicy black fruit and hints of green peppers. The palate is rich and rounded with supple tannins, spice and delicious red berry flavours. Lovely, serious, Chinon.

    The Vigneau brothers, Christophe and Stéphane, have 30 hectares of Chenin Blanc grown on prime Vouvray vineyards spread over a variety of sites.

     

    They also control the “Clos de Rougemont” vineyard that is part of the historic Abbey of Marmoutier. At its height, the Abbey was one of the grandest churches in Europe  and played host to Popes and Kings. However the Abbey and its vineyard fell into disrepair following the French Revolution and the scourge of phylloxera in the 19th century. In the early 1990s, Vigneau-Chevreau was awarded the rights to the vineyard for a 50 year period in return for restoring it to its original condition.

     

    The vineyard was replanted with carefully selected vines from their best vineyards and today the results are there for all to see.

     

    “Clos de Rougemont” has great  depth of flavour, and a delicious long dry finish. It is planted on pure limestone soil and vinified in barrel with a tiny proportion of new oak. A really great Vouvray!

    Jean-Paul Balland has handed over the running of the domaine to his two daughters – Burgundy-trained oenologist Isabelle makes the wines, and Elise runs an impressively efficient office. They have some 20 hectares with fine plots on Le Grand Chemarin and Le Chêne Marchand.

     

    The wines of Bué are full and rich in style, the Balland wines are a classic example from this village. It is said that Jean-Paul made the best wine in the village: we certainly don’t believe that Isabelle is doing any less well – lovely  wines.

     

    The Sancerre Rouge is 100% Pinot Noir from a small, 1 hectare, vineyard.

     

    The maceration and alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel, temperature regulated tanks. Daily pumping over  gives a delicate extraction of colour and flavour. The ageing and malolactic fermentation is in 600 litre barrels (demi-muids) for 1 year.

     

    A brilliant ruby-red appearance, clear and bright. On the nose the initial aromas are of violets and red fruits with a hint of smokiness. The palate is initially very dry with tannic attack that fades to a fruity character with hints of spice, pepper and smoke on the finish.
