  • Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie 2017, Ch. du Coing de St. Fiacre, 12% vol, 75cl

Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie 2017, Ch. du Coing de St. Fiacre, 12% vol, 75cl

    LV03

Château du Coing is located in the village of Saint Fiacre, in the Sèvre et Maine district of Muscadet.

Sèvre et Maine is acknowledged to be the best district in which to grow Muscadet, or Melon de Bourgogne as the variety is also known. These two rivers moderate the cool temperatures which is important at this northerly latitude and the distinctive gneiss soils give a particularly racy, fragrant style of Muscadet. The vines are on average 65 years old.

Only stainless steel was used to ferment and age this wine. However, it qualifies as Muscadet `Sur Lie` due to the six months` ageing on its fine lees after the fermentation. This adds body, richness and longevity to the pure, citrus fruit; a serious wine with firm structure and good depth results.

This wine is appreciated for its young, vivid, dry and fruity side that makes it the perfect companion to seafood. A delicate, pale lemon colour with light floral aromas of jasmine, pear and lightly toasted bread. The palate is juicy with pure, citrus fruit character and a long, fine-textured finish.

Côtes du Roussillon Villages “Les Terroirs”, 2016, Calmel & Joseph, 14% vol, 75cl

    FR12

Founded in 1995, Calmel & Joseph is a négociant house specializing in Languedoc-Roussillon wines from private wineries from across the region. Over the years, they have built close personal relationships with a large number of growers from all appellations. Convinced of the extraordinary potential of this region, oenologist, Laurent Calmel, and Jerome Joseph work together on the vinification, blending and ageing of wines with the common purpose of demonstrating the little known, yet unique quality of these Mediterranean terroirs.

Low yielding vines, Syrah (60%), Grenache (30%), Carignan (10%).

Grapes are picked by hand and benefit from a long maceration period. The Carignan is vinified by semi-carbonic maceration which consists of destemming without crushing the grapes. The Grenache and the Syrah are fermented traditionally with regular punching down to maximise colour and flavour extraction. No wood is used, the wine being aged in concrete tanks.

Crimson in colour with black olive and tapenade nose. The palate is full and fruity with spice and good minerality. The integrated tannins are extremely elegant.

  • Côtes du Rhône 2016, Domaine la Soumade, Frédéric Roméro, 14% vol, 75cl

Côtes du Rhône 2016, Domaine la Soumade, Frédéric Roméro, 14% vol, 75cl

    RR03

André Roméro is a most characterful and talented grower. He founded Domaine la Soumade in 1979 and was joined by his son Frédéric in 1996 on completion of his oenology studies. Today the estate covers 26 hectares, including a new plot of 2.5 hectares of the finest land in Rasteau – pure ‘Argile bleue’ with 60 year old vines.

Domaine la Soumade practices  “agriculture raisonée” (sustainable winemaking) in all of  their vineyards, only treating the vines where absolutely necessary.

They use organic compost which is only applied when soil deficiencies are revealed, following analysis of the soil and vine vegetation. When climatic conditions dictate they use organically permitted treatments (sulphur and copper) to protect the vines from mildew and oidium.

Domaine la Soumade Côtes du Rhône is  80% Grenache Noir and 20% Syrah from low yielding (45 hl per ha) vines varying in age from 8 -15 years.

The grapes are harvested by hand with the best grapes selected on a sorting table in the vineyard.

Traditional winemaking with punching down of the skin cap and a regular pumping over of juice in open stainless steel tanks.

Maceration of the skins lasts between 14 and 18 days with a temperature controlled fermentation.

This is followed by an 18 month maturation of the wine on fine lees in stainless steel followed by a light filtration and bottling.

Coteaux du Giennois 2018, Domaine de Villargeau, Central Vineyards, 13.5% vol, 75cl

    LV11

The Côte de Gien is situated just to the north of Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire.

In 1991, the Thibault family decided to create the “Domaine de Villargeau” on land facing south-southwest and enjoying the greatest amount of sunshine. Two brothers, Fernand and Jean-François Thibault, cleared hillsides abandoned since the phylloxera crisis of the mid nineteen century in order to plant vines. In 2000, they were joined by one of their sons, Marc, returning to the area armed with his apprenticeship and experience in viticulture and oenology.

Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc the wine is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and then aged on its lees, again in steel, before bottling.

Dry, crisp and refreshing, the wine is a slightly lighter and softer style of Sauvignon than that produced in Sancerre and Pouilly. Excellent wine and great value.

  • “Les Amis de la Bouïssière” 2017, Domaine la Bouïssière, 14.5% vol, 75cl

“Les Amis de la Bouïssière” 2017, Domaine la Bouïssière, 14.5% vol, 75cl

    RR07

Domaine La Bouïssière has been run by brothers Thierry and Gilles Faravel since the death of their father in 1990. The family has been farming the 30-50 year old, low-yielding vine organically since the late 1980’s.

Nine hectares of vines are situated at the base of the famous Dentelles de Montmirail making them some of the highest vineyards in Gigondas. This elevation permits a long growing season, adding elegance and freshness to the wines.

Unusually for this part of France, “Les Amis” contains 40% Merlot from a vineyard planted by Thierry next to the river Ouvèze. The Merlot adds a juicy, fruit driven style to the rich and spicy Grenache and Syrah that make up the rest of the blend. Merlot is not a permitted grape variety within the Gigondas appellation which is why the wine is designated vin de France.

  • Château de Ricaud 2015, Cadillac, Côtes de Bordeaux, 15% vol, 75cl

Château de Ricaud 2015, Cadillac, Côtes de Bordeaux, 15% vol, 75cl

    CL10

To the south of Bordeaux city, near Cadillac, Château Ricaud boasts an exceptionally diverse array of soils. Impressed by its quality potential and the architectural splendour of the château, Alain Thiénot (of Champagne fame) bought the property in 1980 and has subsequently put in place a remodelling plan to transform the estate into a benchmark Loupiac and to create a Côtes de Bordeaux worthy of the finest wines.

Château de Ricaud Cadillac is a blend of 85% Merlot,  12% Cabernet Sauvignon & 3% Petit Verdot from vines with an average age of 25 years. The wine was vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by ageing in oak barriques, 20% of which were new, for 12 months.

With its appealing dark ruby appearance, the wine is complex on the nose offering initial notes of strawberry and blackberry. Beautifully structured on the palate, full and generous with rounded, fleshy tannins.  Perfectly integrated oak character accompanies the long, delicately spiced finish.
