    André Roméro is a most characterful and talented grower. He founded Domaine la Soumade in 1979 and was joined by his son Frédéric in 1996 on completion of his oenology studies. Today the estate covers 26 hectares, including a new plot of 2.5 hectares of the finest land in Rasteau – pure ‘Argile bleue’ with 60 year old vines.

     

    Domaine la Soumade practices  “agriculture raisonée” (sustainable winemaking) in all of  their vineyards, only treating the vines where absolutely necessary.

     

    They use organic compost which is only applied when soil deficiencies are revealed, following analysis of the soil and vine vegetation. When climatic conditions dictate they use organically permitted treatments (sulphur and copper) to protect the vines from mildew and oidium.

     

    Domaine la Soumade Côtes du Rhône is  80% Grenache Noir and 20% Syrah from low yielding (45 hl per ha) vines varying in age from 8 -15 years.

     

    The grapes are harvested by hand with the best grapes selected on a sorting table in the vineyard.

     

    Traditional winemaking with punching down of the skin cap and a regular pumping over of juice in open stainless steel tanks.

     

    Maceration of the skins lasts between 14 and 18 days with a temperature controlled fermentation.

     

    This is followed by an 18 month maturation of the wine on fine lees in stainless steel followed by a light filtration and bottling.

    A fine 85 hectare estate in the heart of the Lirac appellation. Pascal Lafond has been joined by his sons, Jean-Baptiste and François, and together they are producing some wonderful organic wines fermented in stainless steel.

     

    This lovely Côtes du Rhône is a blend of Grenache (70%) & Syrah (30%).

     

    The grapes are all handpicked, with strict selection so only the best fruit reaches the winery where all the grapes are destemmed. A short maceration takes place for about 8 to 10 days at a temperature between 23°C and 30°C, followed by fermentation and pressing. The young wine is then aged in stainless steel tanks to maximise the fresh fruit flavours before bottling in the spring following the harvest.

     

    A bright, deep ruby red in appearance the nose has aromas of ripe fruit, cherry, blackcurrant and a touch of garrigue The palate is full of ripe and juicy red fruit flavours, soft, round and concentrated – hugely enjoyable.

    Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe, established in 1891, has been run by the Brunier family for five generations. The estate’s vineyards are situated on the famous “Plateau de la Crau” the stony terrace where there is nothing but “galets roulés”, or rounded stones, as far as the eye can see. This special terroir imparts a highly distinctive minerality to the wines.

     

    With the Bruniers’ expansion into the satellite appellations, Daniel and Frédéric have produced some delightful fruit driven, crunchy wines.

     

     

    “Le Pigeoulet” comes from two separate parcels, 10 hectares on the lower southwest facing slopes of Mont Ventoux and 3 hectares on the east bank of the Rhône, 15km north of Avignon. The blend is 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Cargnan and Cinsault and ageing is in foudres for 12 months.

    Whilst Frédéric has assumed responsibility for most of the day to day work on the domaine, André is still actively involved, that is when he is not following the fortunes of F.C. Barcelona!

    The Sabon estate has 16 hectares of vineyards in some of the best sites of Châteauneuf – but they also have 17 hectares on the western side of the river in Roquemaure where this fine Lirac is produced.

     

    The wine making is today handled by Didier Negron, the son-in- law of the late Jean Jacques Sabon. The vineyards  are managed by Jean Jacque’s brother Denis and his son Julien.

     

    Grenache is predominant as with all the wines of the Domaine. It is blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre and Carignan.

     

    The young wine is aged in large oak foudres for about six months. Very dark in the glass the nose has aromas of black and red fruits as well as spice and tobacco hints. The fruit flavours follow through to the palate that is full and round with soft tannins and warming spice.

    “Mégaphone”, Ventoux AOC, comes from a number of plots on the southern slopes of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The blend is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah and the vines are 25 years old. Ageing is in foudres for 10 months.

    Based in Chavanay, Lionel Faury makes lovely wines and has definitely moved his 17 hectare family domaine to the top of the first division of Northern Rhône growers.

     

    The steeply terraced vineyards are on granite soils and have a south/south east aspect. The grapes (100% Syrah from some of Lionel’s younger vines – 10-35 years old) are hand picked and taken to the winery where they undergo a 15-20 day maceration period in steel followed by fermentation, again in temperature controlled stainless steel, with regular pumping over 2-3 times daily. The wine is then aged for 12 months in wood, a mixture of 2,400 -,3,500 litre foudres, 570 litre demi-muids and 220 litre barriques, 15% of which are new. After pressing the wine is bottled without filtration.

     

    The wine is deep, ruby red in appearance with a rich nose full of black fruit (blackcurrant and blackberry) and cherry aromas. The palate is ripe with good fruit flavours and warming spice supported by a firm, yet not obtrusive, tannin structure.

    Raspail Ay is one of the most celebrated, traditional Gigondas estates. Owner Dominique Ay has now been joined by his son, Christophe and daughter, Anne-Sophie. The 18 hectares of vineyards are perfectly positioned all around the house and are a mix of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre with an average vine age of 40 years.

     

    The grapes are hand picked and then 100% destemmed, vinified in cement tanks and aged in a mix of large foudres and old barriques.. The wines are never fined and rarely filtered. These are wines packed with fruit, and age admirably.

     

    A deep ruby red appearance the nose of the wine has black fruit aromas together with hints of cherry and raspberry as well as pepper and warming spice. The palate has a lovely structure with gentle tannins supporting a melange of fruits, leather and spice. The finish is long and persistent.

    Perhaps the finest estate in Gigondas and certainly one of the finest estates in the Southern Rhône. 25 hectares of vines, with an average age of 65-70 years, sitting in its own elevated hidden bowl, facing north west and surrounded by 100 hectares of wild garrigue.

     

    Originally in the hands of the late Pierre Roux,  Daniel and Frédéric Brunier (of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Vieux Télégraph fame) purchased the Domaine in 1998. Huge improvements and investments have been made both in the vineyards and the cellars and temperature control. A ring of small fermentation vessels have been installed, both wooden and concrete, so they can pick very small parcels at optimum ripeness. Little new oak is used and the wines are matured in large foudres.

     

    “Les Racines” (the roots) is a cuvée made from very old vines (60 + years), grown around the house at the lower part of the domaine. Here the soils are clay and limestone.

     

    80% Grenache, 8% Syrah, 7% Cinsault &  5% Clairette.

     

    The 15 hectares of vineyards are situated on terraced land from the lieu-dit, “Les Pallières”, located around the winery and cellars (at 250 metres in altitude). The grapes are hand picked followed by a traditional fermentation that lasts for 25-30 days in temperature-controlled cement cuves and wooden vats.

     

    The wine is aged in cuves for 10 months, then in foudres for 7-9 months before being bottled unfiltered.

     

    “It displays the velvety, deep and harmonious expressions generated by old Grenache grown on the finest terroirs. Very high ageing potential.”
