Grapes from São Jorge, on the north coast of Madeira, were used and pressed in a mechanical press. Fermentation began and was then halted, whilst the wine was still sweet, by the addition of neutral grape spirit. Ageing is by the Canteiro method where the casks are kept at ambient temperature rather than the more common Estufagem (cooking) process. This makes for cleaner, fresher and more elegant wines with the lovely refreshing acidity that is the hallmark of Barbeito Madeiras.

The letters “D” and “E” on the label refer to the different warehouses where this lovely Madeira was aged.

Ageing took place in an old French oak cask, with a capacity of 1,100 litres, at the warehouse Afonso (D) until mid-2008. In that year the cask was moved to Barbeito’s new warehouse (E).  A very elegant Malvasia (Malmsey) with the lovely acidity that is the hallmark of all Barbeito Madeira.

From this cask Barbeito only filled 1.137 bottles, all individually numbered, in April 2015.
