    Spier is one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa with a recorded history dating back to 1692.

     

    Today they have embraced many modern approaches and aim to minimise the impact of their activities on the environment. They are a Champion member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative, organically certified and Fair Trade accredited.


    Wherever possible, Spier look for ways to support local industry and communities. They support local communities through the Treepreneur Project which encourages people in impoverished communities to grow trees in exchange for essential goods.


    Grapes for the Signature Sauvignon Blanc are hand harvested from selected vineyard blocks and taken to the cellar where they are de-stemmed, slightly crushed and given a short skin contact before being pressed. Fermentation is temperature controlled in stainless steel vats followed by ageing on the fine lees for another three months to give extra body and elegance. This wine is not oaked.


    Pale straw in colour with a greenish hue. Intense aromas of gooseberries, passion fruit, green and yellow peppers and hints of tropical fruit on the nose. Medium bodied good balance between fruit and acidity on the palate.

    Grapes for the Signature Pinotage were gently crushed, de-stemmed and cooled. After two days of cold soaking the juice was fermented until dry in stainless steel tanks. Three pump-overs were conducted daily. After fermentation, 20% of the wine was matured in French oak barrels for 8-10 months and the remainder matured in stainless steel tanks with French oak staves.

     

    Clear bright purple red in appearance, the nose has typical red fruits – raspberries and cranberries.The palate is full of ripe fruit with good balancing acidity, round, with soft tannins, and a long, slightly sweet finish.

    The Vigneau brothers, Christophe and Stéphane, have 30 hectares of Chenin Blanc grown on prime Vouvray vineyards spread over a variety of sites.

     

    The delicious, minerally Vouvray Sec “Cuvée Silex” is from flint (silex) and clay soils. Silex is considered the finest soil type for the Chenin Blanc in this part of the Loire Valley.

     

    Pale straw in appearance, the nose has a lovely blend of herby notes, green apple freshness and just a touch of honey. The palate is dry with apple flavours, brilliant zesty structure and a very long finish.

     

    The late Jean-Michel Vigneau began the process of converting to organic production in the early 1990’s and in 1999 Vigneau-Chevreau received certification from Ecocert. The current generation have taken the next step by adopting a biodynamic approach which pays close attention to the natural rhythms of the earth and lunar cycles.

     

    Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau is one of the only two estates in Vouvray to be biodynamic and they own 25% of the appellation’s organic vineyards – 30 ha.

    This first class Domaine is run by the Després family. It is located at the top of the renowned hill of “La Madone”, the granitic hill immediately above the village of Fleurie where most of the Domaine’s 19 hectares of are located. This hillside is often considered to have the best growing conditions for wine in the area.

     

    Arnaud has taken over the work started by his father Jean-Marc, and the quality of recent vintages are testament to his hard work and skill both in the vineyards and the winery.

     

    The Vieille Vignes is from 80 year old vines and has more depth and richness than most Fleurie whilst retaining a lovely elegant lift.

     

    The wine has a very deep purple appearance with a nose full of ripe red fruit aromas – raspberry and strawberry with a hint of spice. The palate is full, with red fruit flavours layered over a warming spice and mineral core – very impressive.

    The Vouvray Pétillant Brut is 100% Chenin Blanc from low-yielding, 25 year old vines. The grapes are hand picked, crushed in pneumatic presses and fermented in steel. A natural second fermentation then takes place in the bottle to give the wine its fizz. The significance of the term pétillant is that the pressure of CO2 in the wine is lower (3.5 bar) giving a very elegant style. The wine is aged in bottle for 18 months before disgorgement.

     

    Pale gold in appearance, the wine has very fine bubbles. The nose is clean and fresh with apple, pear and citrus fruit aromas. The palate is dry and refreshing with ripe fruit and fine balancing acidity.

    The Vigneau brothers, Christophe and Stéphane, have 30 hectares of Chenin Blanc grown on prime Vouvray vineyards spread over a variety of sites.

     

    They also control the “Clos de Rougemont” vineyard that is part of the historic Abbey of Marmoutier. At its height, the Abbey was one of the grandest churches in Europe  and played host to Popes and Kings. However the Abbey and its vineyard fell into disrepair following the French Revolution and the scourge of phylloxera in the 19th century. In the early 1990s, Vigneau-Chevreau was awarded the rights to the vineyard for a 50 year period in return for restoring it to its original condition.

     

    The vineyard was replanted with carefully selected vines from their best vineyards and today the results are there for all to see.

     

    “Clos de Rougemont” has great  depth of flavour, and a delicious long dry finish. It is planted on pure limestone soil and vinified in barrel with a tiny proportion of new oak. A really great Vouvray!

    The four Cesconi brothers have transformed their family estate in the past decade. Whereas the family previously sold all their fruit to the co-op at Lavis, today they are making some of Italy’s most exciting wines.

     

    The brothers now have 21 hectares of vineyard in and around the village of Pressano situated at an altitude of about 300 metres. All their vineyards are now managed organically. All of Cesconi’s white wines, and the Moratel, are now sealed under stelvin – yet another sign of this family’s forward looking vision.

     

    A blend of  40% Merlot, 40% Lagrein, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon & 10% Teroldego.

     

    Fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel vats with two weeks maceration. The wine was then transferred into 225 litre French oak barrels (of which 20-30% was new oak) for 10 months ageing.

     

    Youthful violet notes shine through this ruby coloured wine. The nose offers considerable aromatic complexity, with aromas of wild cherry, raspberry and blackcurrant. The palate is supple and pleasing while presenting a firm tannic backbone typical to clay soils.

    Larry Turley and his winemakers Tegan Passalacqua and Karl Wicka produce great wines from some of California’s oldest, dry-farmed Zinfandel vineyards. They have managed to persuade the owners of some of California’s finest old vineyards to let them take total control of viticulture; farming organically, reducing yields to extremely low levels and picking very late.

     

    Winemaking is gentle and totally unmanipulated, with very gentle extraction. Only natural yeasts are used in fermentation. The wines are matured for 14-16 months in 75% French, 25% American oak barrels (25% new) and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

     

    Juvenile is made from young vines that have been replanted in several of Turley’s old vine sites.  The vines that make up Juvenile range in age from about 6-25 years, and include fruit from several of their best vineyards across California, including Hayne, Ueberroth, Pesenti, Salvador, Vineyard 101, Fredericks and Kirschenmann.
