“San Rafael” Medium Sherry, Bodegas Barbadillo, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, 19.5% vol, 75cl

    SH11

Founded in 1821, Barbadillo is currently run by the seventh generation of the family and owns 500 hectares of vineyards spread over two estates, Gibalbín and Santa Lucía, both of which are located in the Jerez Superior area.  The Gibalbín estate has an extensive winemaking plant fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Barbadillo’s seventeen wine cellars are strategically distributed over the best areas of Sanlúcar de Barrameda. The cellars occupy a total area of more than 75.000 m² and have an overall capacity of 35 million litres (around 65.000 casks), the largest in Sanlúcar.

For “San Rafael”, a touch of Pedro Ximénez (PX) is added to a dry oloroso resulting in this type of sherry known as anamoroso.” Translated into English as loving or affectionate, the name pays tribute to the smoothness obtained during the lengthy and traditional ageing period.

Mahogany colour with bright highlights, the nose is full and rich with aromas of dried fruit, plums and raisins. The palate is medium dry, beautifully balanced, smooth and silky. The perfect sherry for those who don’t want a bone dry style yet find pure PX just too sweet. Great with puddings or blue cheese.

  • Oloroso “Pata de Gallina”, Juan Garcia Jarana, Almacenista, Lustau, 20% vol, 50cl

Oloroso “Pata de Gallina”, Juan Garcia Jarana, Almacenista, Lustau, 20% vol, 50cl

    SH10

The main occupation of Don Juan García Jarana is running a motorcycle shop, ‘Dos ruedas’, in Jerez, but in his spare time he also manages a 100 year old bodega in the Santiago neighbourhood, which holds around 300 butts. It includes Finos, Amontillados, Olorosos and PX. His Olorosos are widely acclaimed and Lustau have been bottling his Oloroso ‘Pata de Gallina’ in their Almacenista series since 1989.

“Pata de Gallina” means hen’s foot and it is a chalk mark put on sherry butts that display an above average richness and smoothness.

The wine is nearly 20 years old and comes from the oldest solera in the bodega consisting of 38 butts (hence 1/38 on the label). It is thought to have started off as a Palo Cortado and then evolved to an Oloroso profile, which would explain its elegance.

Deep mahogany in colour, the nose is spice, toffee and hints of sweetness. The palate is rich and powerful with notes of dried fruits and a touch of citrus to add freshness. The finish is very long.
