Pioneers of Nelson winemaking, Hermann and Agnes Seifried planted their first vineyards in 1973. Today Seifried Estate is one of New Zealand’s leading family owned wineries.
Aotea represents a selection of wines which the Seifried winemaking team consider to be the very best of the best. The fruit is harvested from single vineyard Estate grown vines. The wines offer texture while maintaining the varietal character of the grape – wines with depth and finesse.
Aotea Sauvignon Blanc is from vines grown in an extremely stony area of the Edens Road vineyard which is some 15 km from the coast and sheltered from the south by the Richmond Ranges. Water and nutrient levels are low which helps Seifried to restrict the plants vigour and to crop at low levels.
Aromatic and fresh Sauvignon Blanc flavours were encouraged prior to vintage through careful canopy management – a significant proportion of the vines leaves were removed to allow light penetration and air movement around the fruiting zone. The fruit was de-stemmed and pressed immediately after harvest and a cool fermentation was initiated in stainless steel tanks to retain the clean, fresh aromatic fruit characters.
Very pale in the glass, tropical melon and lime aromas come through on the nose. The palate is full and flavoursome, and packed with varietal fruit layers. A well balanced palate with refreshing mineral acidity leaves a long lasting impression.
