A family winery that was founded in 1918 as Bodegas Arjona, but in 1983 the Navajas family became the sole shareholders and changed its name to Bodegas Navajas.
Navajas believes that the quality of the wine begins in the vineyards and for this reason they monitor and control the vineyards which belong to their growers in the Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja.
The Gran Reserva is 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano & 5% Mazuelo from the oldest vineyards of the Navajas Estate in La Rioja Alta. The vines undergo a “green harvest” to reduce yields and promote the development of only the best quality fruit. The grapes are hand picked at the beginning of October.
In the winery the grapes are de-stemmed, crushed and allowed to macerate before fermentation in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. This is followed by ageing in American oak casks (with an average age of 3 years) for a minimum of 24 months. The wine then spends a further 3 years in bottle before release.
Ruby red in appearance, the nose has a complex mix of fruit, vanilla, liquorice, herbs, cinnamon and pepper. The palate is rich and elegant with fine fruit, integrated oak, light tannins and spicy, savoury flavours. The finish is very long.
