A very reliable Cru Bourgeois property, Château Caronne Ste. Gemme is located in the Haut-Médoc adjacent to St.Julien. The property dates back to 1648 and has been in the Nony family since the 19th century. The estate consists of 45 hectares of vineyards and produces over 20,000 cases a year.
A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. The wine is matured in oak barriques (20% of which are new, the rest being 2nd or 3rd fill) for 12 months. The château produces lovely elegant, Cabernet driven wine that ages beautifully as this 1998 vintage illustrates.
Despite its age the wine has masses of red fruit aromas with cedar and tobacco notes. The palate is full and elegant with soft fruit and gentle tannins. A delicious and rare example of affordable, mature claret.
The bottles have been refreshed and re-corked at the Château.
