Kilikanoon was founded in 1997 when winemaker and proprietor Kevin Mitchell purchased the property in the hamlet of Penwortham in South Australia’s picturesque Clare Valley. Hailing from a long line of wine grape growers, Kevin now had the opportunity to turn the vision of creating his own wine brand into a reality.
The reclusive Alan Webster lived alone in the years after the second world war in the scrubland west of Penwortham. Trapping rabbits, growing his own fruits and vegetables and making his own wines in a galvanised lean to, he was given the nickname “Killerman” by Mort Mitchell, Kevin’s father, and his friends when they were growing up, after Alan’s bush survival skills of “kill em and eat em”, thus the legend of “Killerman” was born.
Warm days and cool nights promote full fruit ripeness and flavour development whilst still retaining tremendous poise, natural acidity and tannin balance. Wine making is traditional with sixteen months maturation in new and seasoned French oak hogsheads and bottling unfiltered to fully enhance the wines character and appeal.
Brick red in colour with youthful crimson hues, the nose has lifted aromas of red fruits, dark cherries, exotic spices with notes of French oak. The palate is full and rich, texturally rewarding with excellent balance and linearity. Flavours of dark cherries, hints of smoked meats and red fruits combine with the fine boned tannins and subtle oak nuances in a long and persistent finish.
